Klaipedos Nafta plans to start handling bitumen in 2021

Klaipedos Nafta, whose oil terminal in Klaipeda handles exports by Belarusian crude refineries, is planning to start reloading bitumen in 2021 as it is looking for new opportunities amid the neighboring country's threats to divert its cargo away from the Lithuanian seaport of Klaipeda, informs LETA/BNS.

Klaipedos Nafta Darius Silenskis says the state-controlled company is looking to diversify its cargo structure so that its service portfolio is not dominated by one customer.

"Next year, we are planning to start handling bitumen, a new product, and are looking for other transshipment opportunities," Silenskis said in a media comment.

"This is important in mapping out the company's strategy and seeking to ensure that the services portfolio is not dominated by one customer or one type of cargo," he added.

The CEO reiterated his earlier statement that it would be economically damaging for Belarus to redirect its cargo from Klaipeda.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said last week he had instructed the government to draft sanctions against Lithuania and Poland. The authoritarian leader said Belarus would stop using the port of Klaipeda for exporting its products.
