Mexico has decided not to immediately retaliate against the steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, according to Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday.
Sheinbaum announced that the Mexican government would wait until April 2 to assess the situation further, as Trump has pledged to implement additional reciprocal tariffs. She expressed hope that, given the ongoing trade agreement between the two nations, including Canada, there would be no need for such measures.

“We’re going to wait until April 2 and then decide whether or not to impose reciprocal tariffs on aluminum and steel,” Sheinbaum said, emphasizing her preference for a negotiated solution with Trump. She also noted that since Mexico does not impose tariffs on US goods, she hopes the same will apply in return.
Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum imports were set into motion on Wednesday, with no exceptions or exemptions, as promised by the White House. Mexico remains a significant steel supplier to the United States.
