Ministry: UAE interested in Lithuania's LNG, solar energy experience

The United Arab Emirates are interested in Lithuania's experience in small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, as well as innovative solar energy technologies, says Lithuania's Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas, cites LETA/BNS.

The memorandum signed between Lithuania and the United Arab Emirates in Dubai last week facilitates cooperation in fields of renewable energy and energy saving, he told BNS, adding that it was still too early to talk about specific contracts.

"One of the fields is production of solar elements and related technologies, while the second one is our competences in the field of liquefied natural gas, especially in connection to small-scale LNG operations," said Vaiciunas.

In his words, UAE currently extracts around two thirds of the gas it uses, importing the remaining third via land-based and marine LNG imports terminals. The country operates a similar vessel to that of Independence rented by Lithuania, however, has little experience in small-scale LNG projects.

"They indeed see a potential in terms of small-scale project management and that they could possibly work with Klaipedos Nafta. We're talking about technologies and competences, which we have developed, are testing and have available. They are interested in our experience," said the energy minister.

In his words, UAE seeks to reduce the negative environmental effects and take interest in using LNG in heavy transport.

At the end of October, Lithuania's oil product and LNG terminals operator Klaipedos Nafta (Klaipeda Oil) opened a new LNG station for reloading gas onto auto carriers and carrier vessels.
